Class Survey....Please take a moment

Please take a moment to fill out this survey.  I am doing my capstone paper for my masters on flipped learning.  Flipped learning is when the lecture portion of a class is sent home in the form of a video.  That frees up class time to work with small groups, one to one, etc.  I am curious about your feelings on the video lessons that your children have been working on for their homework this year.  I want to continue to improve upon my teaching methods.  Thank you so much in advance for your time.

New Life and Baby Chicks

We are hatching chicks in kindergarten!  Our incubator is filled with a mixture of 12 different kinds of chick eggs.  The flip books we made document the chicks journey out of the egg.  With the egg tooth (it falls off after hatching); the chick will make a small pip, then what we call a zipper, and finally with all the strength the chick can muster, it will push its way out of the egg. The chicks are due to hatch around May 14.

Coin Song

Jack and the Bean Stock

After reading Jack and the Bean Stock, we planted bean seeds.  We tried planting a few seeds in a bag with a wet tissue.  We were able to see the roots growing long before we saw the stem.  Will our seeds grow into the clouds where the giant lived?  We will need more sun for that!

Zach Sobiech

Do you remember the blog post I put up a few months ago titled Strength of Spirit? Zack Sobiech is back with another song called, Fix Me Up.  Zach wrote and performs this with Sammy Brown and Reed Redmond on drums, both former SCCS students.  They sang and performed at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, to a sold out crowd just a few weeks ago.  This coming Friday, March 8, the entire SCCS student body and staff  of SCCS will gather to sing a song in support of Zach and his fight with cancer. Please pray for Zach and his family.

Number Scroll Mathletes

Students celebrated their 100th day by beginning number scrolls.  They began this process by filling out a blank number grid to 100 and taped it to an empty paper towel roll and rolled it up.  Student were only required to write numbers to 100 but they were challenged to become mathletes by adding more pages to their scrolls and writing numbers up to 200, 300, etc.  If a student wrote their numbers to 1,000, she/he became a mathlete and received a Gatorade at a special classroom mathlete ceremony.  This worked well for differentiating number pattern sense.  All of my students completed number scrolls past 200 and the majority past 500. I had three students become mathletes and write numbers to 1,000!  By the time a student has written numbers past 100, they own the knowledge of number patterns and place value to 100. I just sent the scrolls home but left this activity open ended for the completion of the school year.  If students want to continue their numbers, they may complete this at home.  Two of my students are on their way to 2,000 just because they can!!!! How cool it that!

Family Vocabulary Activity to Donate Rice

Thanks to word-of-mouth, Freerice is a well-known and well-played game with over a million registered players.
And, together, we have raised enough rice to feed millions of people. With over 2 billion people active online today, imagine what we could achieve if we all took time to "rice up" against hunger?

A Favorite of Ours!

-10 Degrees....... We might as well have fun!

Our class performed two Science experiments with the cold weather.  First, we blew bubbles to see what would happen. We found out that the bubbles froze immediately and when we touched them they turned to snow.  Then we held up a wet t-shirt.  In five minutes, it froze solid!  This is what the t-shirt looked like after five minutes.  Now we know why it is important to cover our skin in cold weather.
